Pioneer volleyball falls short in season opener

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Platteville volleyball team fell short in all four matches in its season opener at the Captains Classic tournament on Friday and Saturday in Newport News, Virginia, hosted by Christopher Newport University.

In the first match against the University of Massachusetts Boston Beacons, the Pioneers fell 17-25, 26-28, and 20-25.

Junior outside hitter Maddie Dower recorded 16 digs for the Pioneers, and sophomore setter Grace Austin logged 15 digs.

In the Pioneers' second match of the tournament, they lost to the Lawrence University Vikings 3-1.  Austin had 19 digs in the four sets, while junior setter Allie Carter made 26 assists. Junior outside hitter Merritt Johnson recorded 10 kills for Pioneers.

On Saturday for the third matchup of the tournament, the Pioneers' fell to host team, Christopher Newport University Captains. Carter logged 13 assists for the Pioneers, and Austin had a recorded 13 digs.

The Pioneers finished the tournament with a loss to the Stevenson University Mustangs 15-25, 21-25, and 22-25.

Freshman setter Alyssa Wawrzyniakowski recorded 15 assists, followed by Carter's 13 assists. Junior outside hitter Allison Jensen logged 9 kills for the Pioneers.

The Pioneers return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 7 at Loras College at 7 p.m.
