The University of Wisconsin-Platteville Women's soccer team defeated a tough UW-Stout 1-0 on Saturday in Menomonie, WI. The Pioneers (4-10, 1-5 WIAC) were challenged early and often in the game. The Blue Devils (5-9-2, 4-2-1 WIAC) recorded 11 shots in the first half. Pioneer defenseman turned goalkeeper for the game, Cassie Blatz, played well defending UW-Stout's shots. The New Holstein native, in her first game at goalie, recorded seven saves for the Pioneers' to earn the win and shutout. While the Pioneer defense held strong, it was the offenses' time to shine. Freshman Ashley Chernich found a beautifully played ball from teammate Emily Ryan and ripped a shot past the diving Blue Devil goalie. With the lead, Blatz did not let down her guard recording two spectacular saves late in the game to ensure the Pioneer victory. The Pioneers' have a busy week ahead when they will be playing tonight against UW-Oshkosh, Wednesday night and Saturday at noon. All games will be at Pioneer Stadium.
