UW-Platteville Falls to WIAC Leader UW-Whitewater, 2-0

The University of Wisconsin-Platteville women's soccer team dropped a heartbreaking 2-0 decision to host UW-Whitewater on Wednesday night at Pioneer Stadium.

The Warhawks (8-4, 4-0 WIAC) controlled possession for most of the first half and a few minutes in the second half in the win. UW-Whitewater went ahead in the first half when a shot ricocheted off the Pioneers' Melissa Dunlavy and an alert Laren Nashleanas headed it in for the early 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute.

A pressing UW-Platteville defense (2-8, 0-4 WIAC) held the Warhawk attack to just five shots; however, goalkeeper Julie Divita answered the challenge with four saves in the first 45 minutes.

Early into the second half, UW-Whitewater stretched the lead to 2-0 in the 51st minute when Erin Mrazek scored on a header that hit the crossbar and fell just inside the goal line. However, the goal did not dampen the offensive attack for UW-Platteville.

The Pioneers had a shot sail wide in the 77th minute by freshman Ashley Chernich, who emerged in a breakaway setting with a 3-on-1 situation. Continuing the attack, the Pioneers had back-to-back free kicks in the 80th minute that came up short.

Later in the half, in the 82nd minute, a shot by junior Sarah Eck hit the cross bar and landed just inside the goal line to keep the Pioneers off the scoreboard.

The Pioneers will look to bounce back on Saturday at 1 p.m. when they host UW-Eau Claire at Pioneer Stadium.
