Schmitz's Blog on Women's Hoops Final Days in NYC

Sophomore guard Rilee Schmitz wrapped up the University of Wisconsin-Platteville women's basketball team's blog during its trip to New York City.

Today was a great day! It was game day.  We beat the Brooklyn College Bulldogs, 49-39. The game had a much different atmosphere for us but it was very exciting. It was, all in all, a solid team win! We took cabs, which we had not done yet, to and from Brooklyn College. We had an interesting conversation with our cab driver. She asked coach Naderman where we lived. Coach Naderman told her that she lived in Wisconsin in a town that had 200 people in it. The cab driver responded with, "Wow.. Isn't that like, depressing?"

We came back to our hotel to get ready for dinner and the Brooklyn Nets game. We ate at a Hibachi Grill in Brooklyn. It was one where they actually cook your food in front of you. It was pretty cool and tasty! We then headed to the Brooklyn Nets game at the Barclays Center. It was a great game. The Nets ended up beating the Cleveland Cavaliers by three. Did I mention we watched the game with Jay-Z? Yes, the rapper. It was pretty awesome. We then received another surprise from the coaches. We got player passes to be by the court and meet the team. The first guy to come out of the locker room was Jon Leuer, a former Wisconsin Badger player who now plays for the Cavs. After yelling his name to have him come meet us, and making him feel extremely guilty, he came over and we got a picture with him. He asked us where we were from and he said, "Oh, I know Platteville, Bo Ryan built that place." So, that was pretty neat of him to take the time to meet us and get a picture or seven.

Sunday, December 30th:

Today was our first day of really getting to sleep in! So, that was nice because we all seem to be wearing down a bit. We went for brunch at a diner in Brooklyn. We came back to the hotel for a little break and then headed to Baruch College. Today was another game day, only things didn't go as well as we had hoped. We lost to the Bearcats 52-41. We had some pretty good moments but never seemed to get into a groove as a whole team. We were bummed but will bounce back for two important conference games this week! Baruch is near the Empire State building, so when we left it was dark and we got a pretty great view of the top of it all lit up. After our game we headed to Little Italy and had dinner at an Italian restaurant. We had a full five-course meal that was divine. We all enjoyed being at a pretty fancy place! We then did some shopping around Little Italy and headed home.

Today was our travel back home. Most of us were ready to get back to Wisconsin and some of us wanted to stay just a little bit longer. This morning, some of us got up early to go see the Statue of Liberty. It was definitely a sight to see! We also walked to see the Wall Street Bull, which was also pretty neat. This was the last "New York" thing we got to do which was a bummer. Looking back on our trip, it was such a great experience and it was so much fun. We had a safe and smooth travel home. It was a great trip that we will never forget!

Schmitz and the Pioneers return to conference play on Thursday when they square off with UW-La Crosse at 7:30 p.m.
