Pioneers down Luther in 2OT

After more than 103 minutes of scoreless action, the University of Wisconsin-Platteville Pioneers (12-2-1, 1-0 WIAC) defeated the Luther Norse (8-5-2) 1-0 in double overtime on the strength of a goal by Pioneers senior midfielder Chris Brown, his fourth goal of the season.

Brown dribbled from midfield down the left hash before uncorking a hard shot to the lower right corner of the net past Luther's goalkeeper Peter Wright.

Brown's second shot of the game proved to be the golden goal for the Pioneers, who got back to their winning ways after a loss earlier in the week.

Pioneers junior goalkeeper Ian Christensen pitched the shutout, including two saves in the performance. The game was Christensen's ninth shutout of the 2012 season.

The Pioneers and the Norse played strong defense in the first period. The Pioneers did not allow Luther a shot on goal in the first half while Norse goalkeeper Peter Wright converted a save on Pioneer senior Brandon Chmiel's shot on goal.

Chmiel and freshman forward Caleb Sedlacek led the Pioneers with two shots in the first half.

The second half saw more impressive defense from both squads, but the offenses were able to put shots on goal more effectively in the second half. UW-Platteville had nine shots to Luther's seven, and the Pioneers held an edge in shots on goal, 3-2.

In the first overtime, Luther held control of the ball, keeping the Pioneers defense working hard to preserve the scoreless game. With just over two minutes left, Pioneers senior forward Mark Ciszewski had a shot that kicked off the foot of Chmiel and sailed just over the crossbar.
