UW-Platteville defeats Carroll College 2-1 to advance to Sweet 16.

The University of Wisconsin – Platteville Men's Soccer team defeated Carroll College 2-1 Sunday afternoon to advance to the third round of the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Both team's nicknames are Pioneers so it was a matchup of Pioneers versus the Pioneers.  UW-Platteville drew first blood against Carroll when senior Chris Brown went up high to head in a corner kick to give UW-Platteville the lead 1-0 in the 34th minute.

Then just six minutes later in the 40th minute fellow senior Brandon Chmiel stepped up to take a free kick from about 30 yards out.  Chmiel floated a high shot and the Carroll goalkeeper, who was screened on the shot, could not find the ball and it went bouncing into the goal.  UW-Platteville took their 2-0 lead into halftime.  The second half was a half of defense for the Pioneers as junior goalkeeper Ian Christensen keep Carroll College scoreless.

Carroll College was able to score a goal late in the game to cut their deficit to 2-1 but could not score the equalizer.  UW-Platteville closed out the remained of the game to secure the victory.

UW-Platteville advances to the third round and will face Loras College at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa at 7:30 p.m.  UW-Platteville defeated Loras College earlier in the season 2-1 in Platteville, WI.  The Sweet 16 appearance for UW-Platteville is the first appearance in school history.
