The Univeristy of Wisconsin - Platteville Men's Soccer team won their first round game of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer tournament against Gustavus Aldophus Gusties. The Pioneers had scoring option early in the game but then the Gusties defense tightened up. The Pioneers defense and goalkeeper Ian Christensen broght their "A" game today. The game went back and forth for both halves of the match. After a scoreless 90 minutes, the game went into extra time. During the extra time, both teams had chances to score but neither side was able to score the game winning goal. Headed into the second extra time, the two teams again played to a stalemate. After a scoreless 120 minutes, the game would be decided by penalty kicks. Pioneers scored first in the shootout and then the Gusties missed their first shot. Mark Ciszewski stepped up to ball with a chance to win the game for the Pioneers. The Gusties goalkeeper was able to stop Ciszewski's shot and then the attention turned to Christensen. With the a save the Pioneers would win the game and advance to tomorrow's match. Christensen dove to his right and was able to send away the Gusties' shot and secure the victory for his team. The Pioneers advance to play Carroll College tomorrow at 1:30 at Carleton College. Live stats and webstreaming will be available again through the same links as today's match.
