Pioneers begin with two victories

The UW-Platteville men's basketball team began the 2017-18 season with a pair of victories in the Gabe Miller Tipoff Classic on Bo Ryan Court.

Coach Jeff Gard's club beat Waldorff 86-56 Friday and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 74-57 Saturday on the home court.

Jake Showalter poured in 21 points, Robert Duax had 15, and Trey Sigl 11 in the opening victory Friday. Twelve different players scored for the Pioneers, who shot 57.4 percent from the floor to cruise to the win.

On Saturday, the Pioneers faced a much tougher test against CMS, coming off a 23-5 season and ranked 15th in the poll. After a 29-29 first-half tie, the Pioneers outscored the Stags 45-28 in the final period. UW-Platteville held the California visitors to 30 percent from the field in the second half and nailed down the victory by making 16-17 from the line in the final 20 minutes.

Duax led three players in double figures with 19 points, while Carter Voelker scored 14, and Showalter had 12, making 9-11 free throws. Kendrick Morris scored 15 to lead Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, playing without pre-season third team all-American guard Michael Scarlett.

The Pioneers continue their season-opening homestand by playing host to Simpson Tuesday at 7 p.m.
