Men’s Hoops Blow Past the Maple Leafs, 82-53

The University of Wisconsin-Platteville men's basketball team blew past the Goshen Maple Leafs, 82-53, Friday night on Bo Ryan Court in the final game of the second-day of the Gabe Miller Tip-Off Classic.

The Pioneers improved to 2-0 and gave the Maple Leafs their first loss of the season (5-1). UW-Platteville was guided by sophomores Jim Stocki and Jake Manning.  The sharpshooting Stocki went 4-6 from beyond the arc scoring a career-high 18 points. Manning recorded his fifth career double-double as he netted 16 points and grabbed 12 boards. Fellow sophomore Trevor Wittwer had a career day of his own with a career-best 13 points. Senior forward Rob Stallion helped drive the Pioneer offense with seven assists and added six points and three steals.

The Pioneers came out of the gates surging and took a 5-0 lead on a game opening three-pointer by Stocki and an easy layup by junior Chas Cross. The Maple Leaf tied the game up at 15-15 at the 13:33 mark, but UW-Platteville went on a three and a half minute 14-2 run to take a 29-17 lead. Goshen managed to cut the Pioneers' lead back to single digits, 35-26, with 5:34 left in the half.  Freshman Cory Vaassen scored five of his 11 points in the final three minutes of the period to give the Pioneers a 42-29 lead at halftime.

In the second half, UW-Platteville didn't allow Goshen to get any close than 13 points as the Pioneers were able to put the game out of reach when they went on a 10-2 run, 71-46, with just over six minutes left to play. UW-Platteville ended the game with its largest lead of the game, 82-53, on Marcus Jackson's three-pointer.

The Pioneers' defense only allowed one Maple Leaf to score in double figures and held Goshen to 9-24 shooting in the second half, while UW-Platteville shot a solid 58 percent (15-26) in the final period. Goshen's Matthew Martin led the team with 11 points and six rebounds.

UW-Platteville continues its four-game home stand when they take on Illinois Tech on Tuesday at 8 p.m. on Bo Ryan Court. Goshen will wrap up the Gabe Miller Tip-Off Classic against UW-Eau Claire on Saturday at 3 p.m.
