Eagles pull away twice for victories

PLATTEVILLE, Wis.--Visiting UW-La Crosse pulled away twice in the latter innings to sweep a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader from UW-Platteville, 11-0 and 4-1 Friday.

The Eagles used a seven-run eighth inning to break open a relatively tight opening game and beat the Pioneers 11-0 in the opener. Carter Hoffman had four hits for UW-L, and Nick Pescheck added three. Caleb Boushley held the Pioneers to three hits while striking out 12.

UW-La Crosse scored twice in the first inning of the nightcap, but the Pioneers answered in the third when Colin DeBoer's sacrifice fly to center scored Marty Mitch. Pescheck had an RBI single in the eighth for the Eagles, who also added a run in the ninth on a wild pitch. Marty and Johnny Frese each had two hits for the Pioneers, who received 8.2 innings on the mound from Colton Borman.

The Eagles improved to 24-14 overall, 10-8 in the WIAC, while the Pioneers fell to 18-20, 3-15. The Pioneers conclude the season Saturday with another doubleheader against UW-La Crosse, starting at noon at Kendall Murray Field.
