UW-Platteville Chancellor Dennis J. Shields Appointed to the NCAA Division III Chancellors/Presidents Advisory Group

University of Wisconsin-Platteville Chancellor Dennis J. Shields was recently appointed to the NCAA Division III Chancellors/Presidents Advisory Group.

The NCAA Division III Presidents/Chancellor Advisory Group advises and provides input to the fifteen members of the Division III Presidents Council, and facilitates communication from the Council to chancellor/president colleagues in their respective conferences/group of independents.

“For this university, it adds to our visibility on a national level, and I’m honored to be able to provide that,” Chancellor Shields said. “As a former student-athlete myself, I’m excited about the opportunity to discuss and influence policies that will benefit all student-athletes.”

The NCAA Division III Presidents/Chancellor Advisory Group consists of one chancellor or president from each Division III voting conference not currently represented on the Presidents Council or by a chancellor/president on the NCAA Management Council.

Shields joined the University of Wisconsin-Platteville in 2010 and is the 14th chief executive of the institution. Shields’s vision for higher education includes a focus on academic excellence, serious pursuit of scholarship including applied research, and high quality teaching, and experiences and services for students, employees, alumni and friends. Initiatives are focused on giving students the tools that they will need throughout life to be independent, critical thinkers and problem solvers who are contributing citizens within their communities.

An Iowa native, Shields earned his undergraduate degree in business administration from Graceland College and his Juris Doctor from the University of Iowa College of Law. While working on his undergraduate degree at Graceland College, Shields participated on the men's basketball team for the Yellow Jackets.

Immediately prior to becoming Chancellor at UW-Platteville, Shields served as acting vice president of student affairs at The City College of New York – City University of New York. He has held administrative positions at the Phoenix School of Law, Duke University School of Law, The University of Michigan Law School and the University of Iowa.
